1854年,法国遣使会士古伯察出版了《中华帝国纪行》一书,该书对19世纪西方的中国形象产生过重要影响。其英文版问世后,获得了英国舆论的好评。然而,英国驻华外交官密迪乐却对之提出严厉批评,并在次年发表了自己的中国研究著作。有研究者曾将其作为19世纪"表述中国之争"的例证。本文通过对《纪行》、当时英国期刊上的书评以及密迪乐的评论等文本的解读,分析二者的矛盾焦点及矛盾产生的历史语境。
Abstract：In 1854,the French missioner Régis-Evariste Huc published his book L'Empire chinois,which exerted great influence on China's image in the west in the 19th century. And its English version also won favorable comments from public opinions in Britain. However,the British diplomat Meadows severely criticized the book and published his own work about China the next year. Based on relevant literature,this paper analyses the contradictions of the two books as well as their historical context.
